May 2004: Fantasy Gargoyles

For May we are challenging you all to send your gargoyles off on an epic quest - into the realms of fantasy! Have them battling monsters to rescue the maiden fair, hanging out with elves or trolls, sword-swinging, arrow-shooting, axe-weilding... you get the idea. ^_^
Entries can be inspired by fantasy novels, movies, D&D style games, etc.

Title: ... Shiny?
Artist: Amanda 'Shinga' Bussell [DeviantArt Gallery]
I win a self-made prize for lame titles. Anyway, its a thing for a futuristic fantasy fanfic I've thought about once or twice. There's a bit of a crappy explanation here... I would've done LoTR, Dragonlance or Pratchett or something... but I'm so indecisive it hurts. *L* So enjoy shiny magic. :P

"Then Aragorn was abashed, for he saw the elven-light in her eyes and the wisdom of many days; yet from that hour he loved Arwen Undomiel daughter of Elrond."

Title: Centaur Rider
Artist: Cams
This was a hard one. I never knew what one would consider fantasy, I've always thought of Centaurs as Greek Mythology and not fantasy like dragons and elves would be. But I was assured that a centaur would fit nicely into that catagory. While I was sketching this I was imagining it to be set on a nice, sunny day, to bad gargoyles are night creatures.
It was aslo suggested to me that I should throw in a dragon for good messure, but I decided that I wanted firelizards instead, mostly because my one of my original ideas for this picture was going to be something based off of Anne McCaffrey's Pern books.

Title: Blade Dance
Artist: Twitch [Twitch's Elfwood Gallery]
I drew this out of boredom before ever seeing this month's contest, and I just decided to toss this in. I couldn't draw anything relatively good for this... So.... Yah... XD

Title: Poor Wretched Thing
Artist: Jill M [Bloody Blades]
Hey my first entry! Quick pencil sketch of Gollum as a Garg. I recently drew him as Tinkerbell too so this is my way of making it up to him, ha ha. My crappy scanner messed up the colors so thats why it looks pretty cheap.

Title: Riana, the Dragon Tamer
Artist: Nicky Dee [NickyDee's Refuge]
"The town had been in a desolate situation for months. A female dragon has settled in the area recently and was making off with their prize sheep. Then, out of the blue, she came. Her name was Riana and she was a Dragon Tamer. An ancient race, half dragon, half human, their sole purpose was to tame, befriend and relocate problem dragons. With a sweep of her clawed hands and a murmur of words in Drake, she spoke, and within seconds the hissing spitting wild dragoness was tamed, bowing it’s head in reverence as she reached upward with an unafraid hand to caress it’s pebbled green skin…"
LOL. Hope you like the lil story and the pic.

Title: The Empress
Artist: Shauntell
Okay, this pic is old, but it might do. Anyway, she was origninally going to be a descendant of one of my characters, but for this contest she's a russian witch. Mommy Spike was telling me of a book she saw where a young girl, a witch, was wearing a dress similar to the one I drew. And who knew? I thought I had totally made it up!! ^_^ Okay, well, there's obviously going to be some differences . . . but . . .
Anyway, she's a russain witch from . . . oh, maybe the renesance (I can't spell tonight. Too tired). Her two best friends are the dog beasts behind her. Ones the mom and ones the pup.
The pic is entitled; the Empress, but she's an empress of magic, so . . .
Ah . . . I'll be quiet now.

Title: Magic Gargoyles Rayearth
Artist: Spacebabie [The Tower of X]
This is based on one of my favorite fantasy anime series "Magic Knight Rayearth" Where three girls are summoned to fantasy world to become magic knights and saved the world. Instead of three highschool girls couple of gargoyles and Detective Maza are summoned. Angela (As Hikaru) is ready to slay a monster but Elisa (As Umi) is holding her back until Desdemona (As Fuu) comes up with a plan.

Title: Sleeping Dragonrider... In training!
Artist: Athena "Quachir" "Aisugriff" Pendragon [DeviantArt Gallery]
This is my first time entering the MGC. I couldn't resist with the theme. This is one of my gargoyle, Pleiades and her duo winged green dragon Gaviaktrath, the style of the dragon being credited to my friend Tiyanni and recreated with her permission. Pleiades is a part of a clan which ended up on an alternet Pern [© to Anne McCaffrey]. She was in luck in impressing to a hatchling with a set of duo wings like herself (yes this alternet Pern has many oddities in it).
Anyway, this is a sketch of them the day after the hatching. One of the few times that Pleiades sleeps like a normal gargoyle. But for the rest of that story you might want to go to the begining of her story/candidate page.

Title: Arwyn
Artist: Silver [Silver's DeviantART Gallery]
From the comic Sojourn... This is Arwyn with Ayden's Bow.. which makes her shoot these cool firey arrows that blow stuff up.... and stuff. :p
Ok, I'm a little tired and this isn't a very inspired description. Soo... just tring to capture the style of Sojourn's main artist Greg Land.. me like, picture pretty.

Lexington, Broadway, and Demona are roleplaying to escape their normal fantasy world lives. Broadway and Lexington like to dress the part.

Title: Kirin the Conqueror
Artist: Spike [The Rockaway]
In my current fanfic "Tengu," Brooklyn's daughter from TGS, Ariana has gotten involved with Kirin, a teacher from Ishimura. They're about as opposite as they can possibly be... and yet somehow, Ariana managed to talk Kirin into cosplaying as Conan to her Valeria. *L* Maybe he finds it comforting to have such a big sword.
Additional Entry: The original pic of Kirin and Ariana used in the poster.

Title: Atlantian Gargoyle
Artist: Nebulan [DA Gallery]
I didn't know what to do for this one... I mean, aren't gargoyles already fantasy? Anyway, it turned out that May 1 we watched Atlantis with some girls on our floor... so I decided to make an Atlantian Gargoyle. Creative, I know.
Additional Entry: Gargoyles at the Yule Ball- I did do a LotR entry, but I didn't like it, but did submit it to my DA gallery. And since there are plenty of LotR entries, I didn't bother adding it here, but if someone doesn't do a MacBeth/Gimli picture I will very disappointed ;) This one is my Harry Potter crossover. If you have read the fourth book, Goblet of Fire, you might have a vague idea of what's going on in this picture, but only vague.

Title: "A touch of light"
Artist: Carolyn
This is a picture of a gargoyle that instead of having lizard or angel wings has fairy wings. I thought it brought it brought a nice twist to a gargoyles usual appearance.

Title: Goliath and Elisa's Fantasy
Artist: Andrea Hill
I wanted to throw the Elisa and Goliath in here because it seems like it's been a while since we saw these two at the MGC. Goliath cosplaying as a Warrior, and Elisa as a gypsy princess. "There's nothing nicer than enjoying a quite, romantic evening with your soulmate."

Title: Dragonblink
Artist: Kythera of Anevern [Anevern]
On a whim, I drew my friend Dragonblink as a gargoyle, and she said I could submit it for this month's contest. ^_^ The inspiration for her costume comes from Blink's own Renaissance Faire garb. Detail

Title: Little Red Riding Garg
Artist: Dana
What no time, no sleep, and a twisted sense of humor can produce. I had no idea what to do and then very little time to do anything. Fantasy, Fairy tales, they're all the same, right? Yeah, I couldn't resist this stupid idea. Enjoy

Title: Fairytale...gone wrong!
Artist: Amy (a.k.a Doodle-Bug) [Doodle-Bug]
This is kinda rushed, as I wanted to enter it before I went away for the weekend ^.^; Basically, Tobias isn't enjoying this fairytale, feeling rather stupid. His girlfriend Amy however, seems quite smug ^.^; hehe

Title: Morgaine and Gwenhwyfar
Artist: Megan Anne [Megan's Awesome Website of Art]
I have always enjoyed the Arthurian legend, especially the one written by Marion Zimmer Bradley in the Mists of Avalon. Since her telling is centered around Morgaine (more commonly known as Morgan Le Fay) and Gwenhwyfar (a Welsh spelling of Guinevere) I decided to chose them for the subject of this month's entry.

Title: Demonsbane
Artist: Sara Berkeley [Imaginator Central]
I was inspired by the ballad Demonsbane by Mercedes Lackey and Firebird Arts. At Stony Tor, Herald Vanyel sets a horde of demons back upon their masters, the invading Karsites and Lord Nedran.

"I am the bane of demons, who flees them I defend.
Thus Heralds serve a foeman--thus Heralds save a friend!"

Title: The Dragon's Knight
Artist: coda [deviantart gallery]
I didn't know what to draw and my sister give me this idea one week ago. I decided to do this in watercolor because I'm tired of coloring with Photoshop. I rarely use this technic (this is my second essay with watercolor)

This was the first thing I thought of when I read the prompt. It's colored pencils with some computer help.

Title: That wasn't exactly what I meant..
Artist: Lily "Spoonvonstup" Allison [Randomness: It's a good thing]
Huzzah for last minute entries. I had actually planned this one out at the beggining of this month, but the evils of AP testing and the end of school combined in their efforts to delay me. Imagine the scene if you will. Our leading man here has never been very good with the ladies, so when his well-meaning but inexperienced
fairy godmother appears in her magical cloud of smoke, he uses the opportunity to make a wish. Unfortunately, Ms. Godmother must have forgotten to change her wand to it's male setting and..well.... This is what she gets. "Are you sure the girls will go for this?" he asks, as she doubles over in laughter.
